Nathaniel Bryan

Nathaniel Bryan, Ph.D., is an associate professor of early childhood education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin. His teaching and scholarship focus on equity and diversity, critical race theory, culturally relevant teaching, urban education, and Black education, with particular attention to the constructed identities and pedagogical styles of Black male teachers and the schooling and childhood play experiences of Black boys in early childhood classrooms. He received the 2020 Emerging Scholar Award from the American Educational Research Association’s Special Interest Group–Critical Perspectives on Early Childhood Education.

Bryan is the author of Toward a BlackBoyCrit Pedagogy: Black Boys, Male Teachers, and Early Childhood Classroom Practices, and co‑author of Revolutionary Love for Early Childhood Classrooms: Nurturing the Brilliance of Young Black Children, as well as co‑editor of Critical Race Theory and Classroom Practice. He has published widely in peer‑reviewed journals, including Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood Education, Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, Journal of Negro Education, Race, Ethnicity, and Education, Urban Education, and Urban Review.
