Nic Bishop

Nic Bishop is a New Zealand-born biologist, writer, and photographer known for his vivid nonfiction books for children that focus on animals and the natural world. He holds a doctorate in biological sciences and has worked as a research fellow and tutor in New Zealand before becoming a full-time writer and photographer. Bishop is acclaimed for his close-up nature photography and has received major honors, including recognition as a Sibert Medalist for his contributions to children’s nonfiction.

For young readers, Bishop has created and illustrated numerous award-winning titles such as Red-Eyed Tree Frog, Chameleon, Chameleon, Nic Bishop Spiders, Nic Bishop Snakes, and Nic Bishop Frogs, the latter winning the 2009 Gryphon Award for Children’s Literature. His books often pair detailed, information-rich text with striking photography to introduce children to frogs, insects, reptiles, and other small animals, and he continues to live and work in New Zealand.
