Nicora Placa

Nicora Placa is an assistant professor of mathematics education at Hunter College, City University of New York, where she teaches and designs clinical experiences for pre-service teachers and conducts research on mathematics professional learning and coaching. She previously worked for many years as an elementary and middle school mathematics teacher and math coach in New York City, experience that informed her pursuit of a Ph.D. in mathematics education from New York University, following an M.A. from Mercy College and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Placa is the author of 6 Tools for Collaborative Mathematics Coaching (Stenhouse, 2023), a book focused on supporting instructional coaches and teacher teams in mathematics. She is also a coauthor of Proactive Mathematics Intervention, Grades 6–8: Priming for Success Through Engaging Tasks and Purposeful Design, part of the Corwin Mathematics Series. In addition to her books, she has written articles and contributed to research on mathematics teaching and learning, and serves as Coaching Coordinator on the NCSM Leadership in Mathematics Education Board, working with schools and districts to provide collaborative coaching and professional learning for in-service teachers.
