Ofelia García Otheguy

Ofelia García Otheguy, Ph.D., is a Professor Emerita in the Ph.D. programs in Urban Education and Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). A leading scholar of bilingualism, translanguaging, language policy, and sociolinguistics, she is originally from Havana, Cuba and migrated to New York City at age 11. She completed her undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees at institutions within the City University of New York, earning her Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center in 1981.

García has held prior positions as Professor of Bilingual Education at Teachers College, Columbia University; Dean of the School of Education at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University; and Professor of Bilingual Education/TESOL at The City College of New York. She is widely recognized for developing the concept and pedagogy of translanguaging, and is co-author of The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning (Caslon, 2017), together with Susana Ibarra Johnson and Kate Seltzer.
