Paola Sztajn

Paola Sztajn is a professor of mathematics education and dean of the College of Education at North Carolina State University, where she has served as dean since April 2022 and previously as associate dean for research and innovation, head of the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, and interim dean. Originally from Brazil, she holds a Ph.D. in mathematics education from Indiana University, as well as a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in physics from Brazilian universities, and joined NC State’s College of Education in 2008 after serving on the faculty at the University of Georgia and working as a program officer at the National Science Foundation. Her research focuses on elementary teachers’ mathematics knowledge and professional development, and she has published extensively in leading education and mathematics education journals.

Sztajn is the author of Activating Math Talk: 11 Purposeful Techniques for Your Elementary Students, a Corwin Press book co‑authored with Daniel Heck and Kristen Malzahn that supports K–5 teachers in fostering productive mathematical discourse, drawing on insights from Project AIM (All Included in Mathematics). She has also contributed to edited volumes and led major funded projects on mathematics teacher learning, including work on professional development programs that help teachers promote equitable mathematics discourse for all learners.
