Patricia L. Scharer
Patricia L. Scharer is a professor emeritus in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University, where she has specialized in reading and literacy in early and middle childhood education. Her research focuses on early literacy development, phonics and word study, and children’s literature, and has appeared in leading journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, Research in the Teaching of English, Educational Leadership, Language Arts, The Reading Teacher, Reading Research and Instruction, Journal of Reading Recovery, and Literacy Teaching & Learning. She holds a PhD in Reading, Literature & Language Arts (1990), an MA in Reading (1987), and a BS in Elementary Education (1972), all from The Ohio State University.
Scharer is editor of Responsive Literacy: A Comprehensive Framework (Scholastic, 2018), a K–8 literacy resource developed with educators from The Ohio State University Literacy Collaborative. In addition to this work, she has been deeply involved in Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative initiatives and serves as editor-in-chief of The Journal of Reading Recovery and on the board of the Reading Recovery Council of North America.
