Paul Fleischman

Paul Fleischman is an American writer of children’s books, born in Monterey, California, in 1952 and raised in Santa Monica. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico and is the son of children’s author Sid Fleischman, who helped foster his early interest in writing. Fleischman published his first book, The Birthday Tree, in 1979 and went on to write novels, picture books, poetry, short stories, and nonfiction for young readers.

He won the Newbery Medal in 1989 for Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices, and his other honored works include Graven Images and Bull Run. His books also include Seedfolks, Whirligig, Weslandia, The Matchbox Diary, and Glass Slipper, Gold Sandal.
