Paul Hernandez

Dr. Paul Hernandez is a nationally recognized educator, consultant, and author of The Pedagogy of Real Talk: Engaging, Teaching, and Connecting With Students At-Promise, a best-selling work focused on helping educators build authentic relationships with underserved and “at-promise” students. He holds a PhD in sociology with a specialization in the sociology of education, social inequality, diversity, and intersectionality, and has extensive experience as a faculty member, nonprofit administrator, higher education administrator, and educational consultant working with K–12 schools, colleges, and community organizations on college access, student success, and inclusive pedagogy.

Hernandez’s work is deeply informed by his own journey from gang culture and deep poverty on the streets of Los Angeles to academic and professional achievement, a story he shares to inspire educators and students and to ground his “Real Talk” approach in lived experience. He has served in leadership roles such as vice president of academic and student affairs and has been nationally honored for his contributions to equity in education, including awards from the National Education Association and Michigan-based educational organizations recognizing his human and civil rights advocacy and classroom excellence.
