Peter Liljedahl
Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a professor of mathematics education in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, and an associate member in the Department of Mathematics. A former high school mathematics teacher, his research focuses on creativity, insight, and discovery in mathematics teaching and learning, the affective domain, teachers’ professional growth, problem solving, numeracy, and engaging student thinking. He is known internationally for his long-term research program on “thinking classrooms”, in which he has translated more than a decade of classroom-based research into practical teaching practices.
Liljedahl is the author of Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12: 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning, along with related volumes including Mathematics Tasks for the Thinking Classroom, Grades K–5, Mathematics Tasks for the Thinking Classroom, Grades 6–12, and Modifying Your Thinking Classroom for Different Settings: A Supplement to Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. He has served as president of both the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG) and the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME), sits on several mathematics education journal editorial boards, and has received distinctions such as the Cmolik Prize for the enhancement of public education in British Columbia and the Margaret Sinclair Memorial Award for innovation and excellence in mathematics education.
