Rachel JaDean Pinnow

Rachel J. Pinnow is an associate professor in the Department of Learning, Teaching and Curriculum at the University of Missouri, where her work focuses on how second language and multilingual learners develop interactional competencies in academic contexts. Her recent research draws on Systemic Functional Linguistics, social semiotics, and multimodal analysis to examine the integration of language and content learning for second language learners in content-area classrooms, including studies conducted in multilingual contexts such as South Africa, Cuba, and K–12 schools in the United States.

Pinnow has published in journals and collections such as Anthropology & Education Quarterly, Linguistics & Education, and the International Handbook of Semiotics, contributing anthropological insight into the role of context in second language acquisition. She is a co-author of Teaching Math to Multilingual Students, Grades K–8: Positioning English Learners for Success (Corwin Mathematics Series, 2021), which provides equity-oriented approaches to mathematics instruction for multilingual learners.
