Rachel Karchmer-Klein

Rachel Karchmer-Klein, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware, where she teaches undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in literacy and educational technology. A former elementary classroom teacher and reading specialist, she earned her PhD in Reading Education from Syracuse University, following a BA in Political Science from Ithaca College and an MEd in Elementary Education from Mount Saint Mary College. Her research focuses on relationships among literacy skills, digital tools, instructional design, and teacher preparation, with particular emphasis on technology-infused and online instruction.

Karchmer-Klein is the author of Putting AI to Work in Disciplinary Literacy: Shifting Mindsets and Guiding Classroom Instruction, a practical guide for integrating AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot into grades 6–12 disciplinary literacy instruction while maintaining academic rigor and student voice.
