Renate Nummela Caine

Renate Nummela Caine is an educational psychologist, teacher educator, and consultant on brain-based learning. She is principal of Caine Learning LLC and works with school districts, educators, and communities to implement brain/mind learning principles in classrooms, including work with underachieving K–5 schools to design more innovative, brain-compatible teaching strategies. She is professor emeritus of education at California State University, San Bernardino, where she also served as executive director of the Center for Research in Integrative Learning and Teaching; her teaching career has spanned levels from kindergarten through university. Caine earned her PhD in educational psychology from the University of Florida.

Caine is the senior author, with Geoffrey Caine, of the influential book Making Connections: Teaching and the Human Brain, and a leading author of the 12 Brain/Mind Learning Principles in Action series, including 12 Brain/Mind Learning Principles in Action: Teach for the Development of Higher-Order Thinking and Executive Function and earlier fieldbook editions. Across these works, she has helped articulate a framework for classroom practice grounded in research on how the brain learns, with an emphasis on learning climate, instructional design, and higher-order thinking.[
