Robert E. Probst

Robert E. Probst is a Professor Emeritus of English Education at Georgia State University, a respected authority on the teaching of literature and adolescent reading. He began his career teaching English at the junior high and high school levels in the Baltimore area, later serving as a supervisor of English for a large Maryland school district, and has held roles including research fellow at Florida International University and consultant to schools nationally and internationally with a focus on literacy improvement. Probst has been active in professional organizations, serving on the Conference on English Education Board of Directors, the NCTE Commission on Reading, and as a journal columnist, and he received the National Council of Teachers of English’s Exemplary Leadership/Outstanding Leader Award from the Conference on English Leadership.

Probst is the author of Response and Analysis and coauthor or coeditor of several influential professional texts for educators, including Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice (with Kylene Beers and Linda Rief) and Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters (with Kylene Beers). He and Beers have also coauthored Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction: Stances, Signposts, and Strategies, along with related works on signposts and strategies
