Rochella Black

Rochella Black, M.S., is a coauthor of Road to the Code: A Phonological Awareness Program for Young Children, an 11‑week, evidence-based intervention designed to teach phonemic awareness and letter–sound correspondence to kindergarten and first-grade students. She is also a coauthor of the research study “Developing Phonological Awareness and Word Recognition Skills: A Two-Year Intervention with Low-Income, Inner-City Children,” which examined intensive early literacy instruction for young children.

Black has worked as a kindergarten teacher, first-grade teacher, and special education resource teacher for approximately 24 years in both inner-city schools in Syracuse, New York, and suburban schools in Northport–East Northport, New York. In addition, she served as project coordinator for a large-scale kindergarten and first-grade reading research project directed by Benita A. Blachman, during which the Road to the Code manual was developed and evaluated.
