Roya Q. Scales
Roya Q. Scales, PhD, is a professor of literacy education at Western Carolina University’s College of Education and Allied Professions, where she teaches in the School of Teaching and Learning. She holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in literacy teacher education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, along with North Carolina licensure in Elementary Education (K–6) and K–12 Reading Specialist certification.
An educator for more than three decades, including 11 years as a K–2 classroom teacher, Scales’s research focuses on thoughtfully adaptive teaching, teachers’ professional judgment and visions, literacy teacher education, and effective literacy instruction. She is coauthor, with Gerald G. Duffy, of Explaining Reading: Fourth Edition – A Resource for Explicit Teaching of Concepts, Skills, and Strategies, and has published widely in literacy and teacher education journals; she also serves as Editor of Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties.
