Ruth Chan

Ruth Chan is a Chinese Canadian author and illustrator of children’s books and comics, and the creator of the middle-grade graphic memoir Uprooted: A Memoir About What Happens When Your Family Moves Back (Roaring Brook Press, 2024). Born in Canada, she spent her teens in Hong Kong and mainland China, experiences that directly inform Uprooted, which recounts her family’s move from Toronto to Hong Kong in 1993 when she was 13.

Chan has illustrated multiple children’s titles, including Have You Seen Gordon?, Rick the Rock of Room 214, Thank You, Neighbor!, The Alpactory, and Hard-Boiled Bugs for Breakfast. Her comics work has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times and New York Magazine. Uprooted has been widely acclaimed and named a Best Book of 2024 by NPR, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, and New York Magazine, and it received the SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Illustrated Book/Graphic Novel for Older Readers. Chan is a proud Canadian and currently lives in New York City with her family.
