Ruth Harbin Miles
Ruth Harbin Miles is a mathematics coach and educator known for her work in developing teachers’ content knowledge and strategies for engaging students in high-level mathematics learning. She has extensive experience coaching rural, suburban, and inner-city school mathematics teachers and previously coordinated the K–12 Mathematics Teaching and Learning Program for Olathe, Kansas Public Schools for more than 25 years. Miles has also taught mathematics methods courses as an adjunct instructor at Mary Baldwin College/University in Virginia and has been involved in teacher education through her consultancy work.
Miles has served on the Board of Directors for major professional organizations, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), as well as the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics. She is co-author of several professional books for mathematics educators, including Visible Thinking in the K–8 Mathematics Classroom (with Ted H. Hull and Don S. Balka), as well as works on mathematics coaching, leadership, Common Core mathematics standards, and realizing rigor in the mathematics classroom.
