Ryan L. Schaaf

Ryan L. Schaaf is an associate professor of Educational Technology and chair of advanced programs at Notre Dame of Maryland University, as well as a graduate faculty member in the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. He has worked in education for more than 15 years, beginning as a public school teacher, instructional leader, curriculum designer, and technology integration specialist in Maryland, where he was nominated for Maryland Teacher of the Year in 2007. Schaaf holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership for Changing Populations from Notre Dame of Maryland University, an M.S. in Educational Technology from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.S. in Elementary Education from Towson University.

Schaaf is the co-author of Literacy Is Still Not Enough: Modern Fluencies for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment alongside Nicky Mohan and Ian Jukes, and has also co-authored several other education titles, including Reinventing Learning for the Always-On Generation, Making School a Game Worth Playing, A Brief History of the Future of Education: Learning in the Age of Disruption, and Learner Choice, Learner Voice: A Teacher’s Guide to Promoting Agency in the Classroom. His research and writing focus on digital game-based learning, modern digital fluencies, online and blended learning, and educational reform, and he has published related work in journals such as
