Sandra Butvilofsky
Sandra A. Butvilofsky is a biliteracy scholar and bilingual education specialist whose work centers on the reading and writing development of simultaneous Spanish–English bilingual children from preschool through elementary school. She serves as a Biliteracy Instructional Coach in the Boulder Valley School District and has been deeply involved with the Literacy Squared initiative since 2006, contributing to program development, research, and professional development for bilingual teachers and administrators. Butvilofsky earned both her M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity with a specialization in biliteracy from the University of Colorado Boulder, and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Santa Clara University.
Butvilofsky is coauthor of Biliteracy from the Start: Literacy Squared in Action and Biliterate Writing From the Start: The Literacy Squared Approach to Asset-Based Writing Instruction, works that present research-based frameworks for biliteracy and asset-based writing instruction for emerging bilingual learners. Her research has examined bilingual children’s early conceptualizations of writing in Spanish and English and their biliterate reading trajectories, and her scholarship includes journal articles and book chapters on biliterate writing and reading development and on preparing teachers to work effectively with emerging bilingual students.
