Scott Seider

Scott Seider is a professor of applied developmental and educational psychology at the Lynch School of Education and Human Development at Boston College, where his research focuses on how educators and parents foster young people’s civic development, character development, and critical consciousness. He has previously worked as a high school English and literacy teacher in the Boston Public Schools and Westwood (MA) Public Schools, and as a teacher educator at Boston University. Seider holds a bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature from Harvard College and master’s and doctoral degrees in education (Human Development and Psychology) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

He is the author or co-author of multiple books on schooling, character, and equity, including Educating for Justice: Schoolwide Strategies to Prepare Students to Recognize, Analyze, and Challenge Inequity (with Aaliyah El-Amin and Julia Bott), a research-based roadmap for justice-centered, schoolwide practices that cultivate students’ critical consciousness. His other works include Schooling for Critical Consciousness: Engaging Black and Latinx Youth in Analyzing, Navigating, and Challenging Racial Injustice and Character Compass: How Powerful School Culture Can Point Students Toward Success, which received an outstanding book award from the American Educational Research Association’s Moral Development and Education special interest group.[2
