Sean Rubin

Sean Rubin is an American author and illustrator of children’s books, known for combining detailed artwork with carefully researched storytelling. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up drawing characters from books such as Redwall and The Lord of the Rings. He studied art and archaeology at Princeton University. Rubin wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Bolivar, which received multiple starred reviews and was nominated for awards including an Eisner Award, an ELG, a Ringo Award, and the Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He later wrote and illustrated This Very Tree: A Story of 9/11, Resilience, and Regrowth and The Iguanodon’s Horn: How Artists and Scientists Put a Dinosaur Back Together Again and Again and Again, the latter recognized as a Cook Prize Silver Medalist.

In addition to his author-illustrator work, Rubin has illustrated several other notable books, including volumes in Brian Jacques’s bestselling Redwall series, the nonfiction picture book The Astronaut Who Painted the Moon: The True Story of Alan Bean, and The Passover Guest, which won the 2022 Sydney Taylor Book Award. He lives in central Virginia with his family.
