Shelley Harwayne

Shelley Harwayne is an educator, literacy leader, and author who has spent more than thirty years in New York City public schools as a teacher, staff developer, co-director of the Teachers College Writing Project at Columbia University, founding principal of the Manhattan New School, and superintendent of Community School District 2 in Manhattan. She has also worked widely as a consultant and keynote speaker in the United States, Canada, and internationally.

Harwayne is the author of numerous professional texts on literacy and writing instruction, including Above and Beyond the Writing Workshop, Lifetime Guarantees: Toward Ambitious Literacy Teaching, Writing Through Childhood: Rethinking Process and Product, and Messages to Ground Zero: Children Respond to September 11, 2001, as well as coauthor of Living Between the Lines with Lucy Calkins. She has additionally published books for emergent readers and a tribute to students who witnessed 9/11, and was honored with the National Council of Teachers of English Language Arts Educator of the Year award.
