Sonia Sotomayor

Sonia Sotomayor is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and the first Latina and third woman to serve on the Court. Born in the Bronx, New York, on June 25, 1954, to Puerto Rican parents, she earned her B.A. from Princeton University in 1976, graduating summa cum laude, and her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979, where she served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal. She worked as an assistant district attorney in New York County from 1979 to 1984, then as an associate and later partner at the New York law firm Pavia & Harcourt from 1984 to 1992, before serving as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (1992–1998) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (1998–2009). She was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama and has served as an associate justice since August 8, 2009.
