Stephen D. Brookfield

Stephen D. Brookfield is a scholar of adult education and critical pedagogy whose work focuses on helping educators and learners think critically about dominant ideologies and their own assumptions. Over a career spanning about 40–45 years, he has taught and consulted in adult, community, organizational, and higher education settings in England, Canada, Australia, and the United States, and has held academic appointments at institutions including the University of British Columbia, Teachers College, Columbia University, Harvard University, and the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis–St. Paul. He earned his B.A. from Lanchester Polytechnic Institute, M.A. from the University of Reading, and Ph.D. from the University of Leicester, and has held roles such as John Ireland Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor at the University of St. Thomas, as well as Distinguished Scholar at Antioch University, Adjunct Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Emeritus Professor at the University of St. Thomas.

Brookfield has written, co-written, or edited nineteen books on adult learning, teaching, discussion, critical theory, and critical thinking, six of which have received the Cyril O.
