Steve Graham

Steve Graham is a Regents and Warner Professor in the Division of Leadership and Innovation at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, and a leading expert on writing development, writing instruction, and the connections between reading and writing. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has conducted extensive research on how writing develops, why some students experience difficulties, and which instructional practices most effectively improve the writing of typically developing students and those with special needs, particularly in elementary and secondary urban school settings. He holds an Ed.D. in Special Education from the University of Kansas and an M.S. in Learning Disabilities from Valdosta State College.

Graham has authored or coauthored hundreds of journal articles, book chapters, and books on writing and learning, and has played a major role in synthesizing research for practitioners through influential reports such as Writing Next, Writing to Read, and Informing Writing funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. He is coauthor or editor of major reference works including the Handbook of Writing Research, Handbook of Learning Disabilities, APA Handbook of Educational Psychology, Writing Better, Powerful Writing Strategies for All Students, and Making the Writing Process Work, and he served as editor of journals such as Exceptional Children, Contemporary Educational Psychology, Journal of Writing Research, *Focus on Exceptional Children
