Steven Leinwand

Steven Leinwand is a Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in Arlington, Virginia/Washington, DC, and has held leadership positions in mathematics education for more than three decades. He previously served for 22 years as Mathematics Consultant/Supervisor for the Connecticut State Department of Education, where he oversaw statewide K–12 mathematics initiatives, and he is a past president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics as well as a former member of the NCTM Board of Directors. In recognition of his national impact on math education, he received the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Mathematics Education Leadership Award from NCSM in 2015 and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

Leinwand is the author or coauthor of numerous professional resources for mathematics educators, including Developing Numerical Fluency: Making Numbers, Facts, and Computation Meaningful (coauthored with Patsy Kanter), Invigorating High School Math: Practical Guidance for Long-Overdue Transformation (with Eric Milou), Number Talks: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages, and The Math Tutor’s Handbook: Strategies and Tips for Success.
