Susan Hopewell
Susan Hopewell, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Equity, Bilingualism, and Biliteracy at the University of Colorado Boulder and the Executive Director (and co‑founder) of Literacy Squared, a research and professional development initiative focused on strengthening biliteracy education for Spanish–English emerging bilingual children in U.S. schools. She earned her Ph.D. in Education Equity and Cultural Diversity at the University of Colorado Boulder, and her research centers on biliteracy development, including children’s oracy (spoken language) and classroom pedagogies that build students’ metalinguistic awareness.
Hopewell is a coauthor of Biliteracy from the Start: Literacy Squared in Action (Caslon/Brookes, 2014) and Biliterate Writing From the Start: The Literacy Squared Approach to Asset-Based Writing Instruction (Brookes, 2023), both of which present the Literacy Squared model for designing effective, asset-based biliteracy and biliterate writing instruction for emerging bilingual learners. Through Literacy Squared, she provides professional development to schools across the United States to help educators design and implement research-based biliteracy instruction.
