Tanya Baker

Tanya Baker is a teacher, writer, and nonprofit education leader with more than two decades of experience in secondary and postsecondary education. She is the executive director of the National Writing Project (NWP), having previously served as NWP’s director of national programs, where she designed and led large-scale professional learning initiatives for teacher-leaders across content areas. Before joining NWP, Baker spent approximately 12 years as a high school English teacher in Maine and co-directed the Maine Writing Project at the University of Maine in Orono. She holds an EdD from the University of Maine in Orono.

Baker is a coauthor of Strategic Reading: Guiding Students to Lifelong Literacy 6–12, and serves as a co-editor of Writing Instruction Across the Disciplines: Evidence-Based Practices in Grades 6–12, published by Guilford Press, alongside Steve Graham and Carol Booth Olson. Her work focuses on adolescent readers and writers, teacher professional development, and writing in the disciplines, particularly writing as an integral part of learning in science and history and in out-of-school contexts.
