Tiana Silvas

Tiana Silvas is a New York City public school educator and writer with more than twenty years of classroom experience. She currently teaches sixth-grade English language arts and has previously taught upper elementary, worked as a literacy coach at PS 59, and participated in several equity-centered education think tanks. Silvas’s work centers on building resilient, agency-rich writing communities and fostering empathy and understanding among students.

Silvas is the author of Every Student’s Right to Write: Classroom Writing Rooted in Community and is recognized nationally in the field of writing instruction. She received the 2019 NCTE Donald H. Graves Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Writing and was named the NYC 2025–2026 Big Apple District Champion. She has also served on the NCTE Executive Committee as the Middle Level representative-at-large, contributing to professional conversations on writing, equity, and community in schools.
