Trevor A. Bryan

Trevor A. Bryan is a New Jersey–based visual art educator and literacy consultant known for integrating visual texts into reading and writing instruction. He has been an art teacher in New Jersey for over 20 years and is the creator of the Art of Comprehension (AoC) approach, a framework that uses artwork and “access lenses” such as faces, body language, and sound/silence to help students develop comprehension, critical thinking, and narrative skills. Since 2012, he has presented his work on reading comprehension, writer’s craft, and arts integration at national and state art and literacy conferences, and has consulted for institutions including the Princeton University Art Museum and Peter H. Reynolds’ education company, FableVision Learning.

Bryan is the author of The Art of Comprehension: Exploring Visual Texts to Foster Comprehension, Conversation, and Confidence (Stenhouse, 2019) and Narrative Know-How: A Fresh Approach to Support Comprehension and Craft in the K–6 Classroom (Corwin Literacy, 2025), which extend his AoC and mood-structure strategies to support K–6 readers and writers. His Art of Comprehension work has also been featured in professional publications and media, including an article in Education Digest and instructional segments on NJTV’s Learning Live series.
