Troy W. Hicks

Troy Hicks is a professor of English and education at Central Michigan University, where he focuses on the teaching of writing, the intersections of literacy and technology, and teacher education and professional development. He serves as director of the Chippewa River Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, and has been recognized with honors such as the Divergent Award for Excellence for Initiative for 21st Century Literacies Research, Teacher Educator of the Year from the Michigan Reading Association, and Central Michigan University’s Excellence in Teaching Award. A former middle school teacher, he collaborates with K–12 educators to explore how newer literacies and digital tools can support student learning.

Hicks is the coauthor of Teaching Writing in the Age of AI: Strategies for Teachers of Secondary Students, which offers guidance for integrating generative AI tools into secondary writing instruction, and of Research Writing Rewired: Lessons That Ground Students’ Digital Learning. His other books on digital teaching and learning include The Digital Writing Workshop and Crafting Digital Writing (Heinemann), Because Digital Writing Matters (Jossey-Bass, coauthored), as well as Create, Compose, Connect!, Mindful Teaching with Technology, Creating Confident Writers, and Ask, Explore, Write!.
