Vivian Maria Vasquez

Vivian Maria Vasquez is a professor in the School of Education at American University in Washington, DC, specializing in critical literacy and language and literacy education. Before moving into higher education, she taught preschool and in public schools for 14 years. She holds a Doctor of Education in Language and Literacy Education with a minor in Early Childhood Education from Indiana University (1999), as well as earlier degrees from the University of Toronto, Lakehead University, York University, and Mount Saint Vincent University in literacy and education.

Vasquez is the author of numerous works on critical literacy, including Negotiating Critical Literacies with Young Children: 10th Anniversary Edition and Critical Literacy Across the K–6 Curriculum. She has also written on technology and critical literacy in early childhood. In addition to coauthoring Critical Comprehension [Grades K–6]: Lessons for Guiding Students to Deeper Meaning with Katie Kelly and Lester Laminack, she has published multiple journal articles and book chapters that explore critical literacy as a way of being and doing in K–6 classrooms.
