William Himmele

William Himmele is a professor of Teacher Education at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, where he has taught for more than 20 years. He previously worked as an ESL teacher and speech pathologist in New York and California, and has served as a higher education administrator and university coordinator, developing teacher education courses and programs to support multilingual learners’ academic and sociolinguistic development in K–12 classrooms. Himmele earned his PhD in intercultural education and a master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Biola University.

He is coauthor, with Pérsida Himmele, of several ASCD books and resources, including the bestselling Total Participation Techniques: Making Every Student an Active Learner (multiple editions) and Why Are We Still Doing That?: Positive Alternatives to Problematic Teaching Practices. Together they have also authored additional works such as The Language-Rich Classroom: A Research-Based Framework for Teaching English Language Learners and Total Literacy Techniques: Tools to Help Students Analyze Literature and Informational Texts, and they consult internationally on student engagement and teaching English language learners.
