Barbara J. Dougherty
Barbara J. Dougherty is a mathematics educator and former professor at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where she served as director of the Curriculum Research & Development Group. Her work focuses on supporting students who struggle in mathematics, particularly in developing understanding of algebraic concepts and skills, and she has been principal or co-principal investigator on multiple grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education to develop intervention modules and progress monitoring tools for elementary, middle, and high school students. She holds teaching certifications in middle and high school mathematics and K–12 special education.
Dougherty is the author or coauthor of numerous publications, including Classroom-Ready Rich Algebra Tasks, Grades 6–12: Engaging Students in Doing Math and the Corwin Mathematics Series titles The Math Pact, Elementary: Achieving Instructional Coherence Within and Across Grades, The Math Pact, Middle School: Achieving Instructional Coherence Within and Across Grades, and The Math Pact, High School: Achieving Instructional Coherence Within and Across Grades. She has also contributed to works such as M^Power: A Pathway to Understanding Algebra and Assisting Students Struggling With Mathematics: Interventions in the Elementary Grades, and served on the author panel for the Institute of Education Sciences’ What Works Clearinghouse practice guide on assisting elementary students who have difficulty learning mathematics.
