    Barbara Moss

Barbara Moss, PhD, is a professor of literacy education at San Diego State University, where she teaches preservice and graduate-level courses in literacy and works with credential, master’s, and doctoral students. She previously taught reading and English language arts at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and has also served as a university professor in both Ohio and California. Her research focuses on informational texts, disciplinary literacy, children’s literature in the classroom, and teachers’ implementation of content-area literacy strategies. She has served as an associate editor of The Reading Teacher and on the editorial advisory board of The California Reader, and has published widely in journals such as The Reading Teacher, The Journal of Literacy Research, and Reading and Writing Quarterly.

Moss is the coauthor of 40 Strategies for Guiding Readers through Informational Texts (with Virginia S. Loh-Hagan), a practical resource offering classroom strategies for helping students comprehend informational text. She has also authored, coauthored, or edited multiple other books on independent reading, teaching informational texts, new literacies, and children’s nonfiction trade books, and she frequently presents her work at professional conferences.
