David Pugalee

David K. Pugalee is a professor of education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he serves as director of the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education. He earned his PhD in mathematics education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has more than a decade of classroom teaching experience at the K–12 and higher education levels, including teaching mathematics and science. His research focuses on the role of language in STEM teaching and learning, and he has led multiple STEM education projects and major grants in areas such as professional development for science educators and broadening participation in middle school computer science.

Pugalee is coauthor of Lesson Imaging in Math and Science: Anticipating Student Ideas and Questions for Deeper STEM Learning and has written additional books, including Effective Content Reading Strategies to Develop Mathematical and Scientific Literacy: Supporting the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. He has published research articles in journals such as American Educational Research Journal, Educational Studies in Mathematics, and School Science and Mathematics, and has contributed books and chapters published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, including work on the NCTM Navigations series and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics Great Tasks.
