Gisela Ernst-Slavit

Gisela Ernst-Slavit is a Professor Emerita at Washington State University Vancouver and has taught courses in sociolinguistics, literacy and biliteracy, second-language teaching and learning, and issues in the education of Latinx students. She earned a Ph.D. in Bilingual/Multicultural Education from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in Multicultural/Multilingual Education and Educational Research from Florida State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

A native of Peru, she grew up speaking Spanish and German at home and English at school. Her research focuses on multilingual learners, academic languaging, culturally responsive teaching, and teacher preparation, and she is the author or coauthor of 12–13 books and more than 100 articles and chapters. Among her books are Academic Languaging: Engaging Multilingual Students in Content Area Learning and the Academic Language in Diverse Classrooms volumes for English language arts and mathematics.
