Jaleel R. Howard

Jaleel R. Howard, MEd, is a doctoral student in urban education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in the School of Education and Information Studies. His research focuses on urban schooling and the social forces that shape the educational experiences and outcomes of chronically underserved and historically marginalized students, particularly in ways that improve school spaces and classroom practice for these groups.

A former fifth- and sixth-grade English/English language arts teacher, Howard has extensive experience with classroom supports and accommodations that enhance learning for underrepresented students. He is the co-author of No More Teaching Without Positive Relationships (NOT THIS, BUT THAT), which examines teacher–student relationship research and offers strategies for building authentic, culturally responsive relationships that support student learning. He has also coauthored work on “radical care” for Black boys in schools, including an article in Educational Leadership with Tyrone C. Howard.
