Janel Keating

Janel Keating is an education leader and author known for her work on professional learning communities (PLCs) and districtwide school improvement. She is the former superintendent of the White River School District in Washington, where she also previously served as deputy superintendent, director of student learning, and principal of Mountain Meadow Elementary, as well as an elementary and middle school teacher. During her tenure, she was recognized with honors such as the Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Award in Washington and Principal of the Year in Pierce County, and she received the Carroll College Alumni Academic Achievement Award. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Carroll College in Montana, a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Idaho, and a superintendent’s certificate from Seattle Pacific University.

Keating has coauthored multiple books and numerous articles on leadership and school improvement, with a particular focus on implementing PLCs at scale. Her works include Leading PLCs at Work® Districtwide: From Boardroom to Classroom, written with Robert Eaker, Mike Hagadone, and Meagan Rhoades, which provides guidance for aligning PLC efforts across an entire school district. She is also an active consultant and presenter, working with schools and districts across the United States on continuous improvement and collaborative practices.
