Margarita Espino Calderon

Margarita Espino Calderón is a Professor Emerita and Senior Research Scientist at Johns Hopkins University, where she has led numerous research projects focused on the language and literacy development of multilingual and English learner students. Born and raised in Juárez, she has served on national literacy panels and advisory boards, including the National Literacy Panel for Language Minority Children and Youth and the Carnegie Adolescent English Language Learners Literacy Panel, and has been a consultant for organizations such as the U.S. Department of Justice and the Office for Civil Rights. She has also developed widely implemented models such as Bilingual Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (BCIRC) and Expediting Comprehension for English Language Learners (ExC-ELL), and has authored more than 100 publications on language, literacy, and professional development.
