Michelle Stephan
Michelle Stephan is a professor of mathematics education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she holds a joint appointment in the Cato College of Education and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. She earned her EdD in mathematics education from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education in 1998, following a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 1992 and a master’s degree in mathematics from Mississippi State University in 1994. Before joining UNC Charlotte, she taught middle school mathematics in Florida for seven years, experience that informs both her teaching of middle and secondary mathematics methods courses and her work providing professional development to K–12 teachers.
Stephan is the author of Lesson Imaging in Math and Science: Anticipating Student Ideas and Questions for Deeper STEM Learning, a book that introduces an inquiry-oriented planning approach to help teachers anticipate students’ solutions, questions, and misconceptions in STEM classrooms. Her research focuses on design research methodology, lesson imaging for inquiry STEM, mathematics education for the 21st century, and supporting students with special needs in mathematics, and she has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers in these areas.
