Peter Afflerbach

Peter Afflerbach is an American educator and researcher specializing in literacy, reading assessment, and reading comprehension. He is a Professor of Education (and Professor Emeritus) in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland, College Park, where his work has focused on reading assessment, individual differences in reading, reading strategies, and verbal reporting methodologies. He received his doctorate in reading from the University at Albany (SUNY) and previously taught Title I elementary reading, junior high remedial reading and writing, and high school English in New York public schools.

Afflerbach is the author of Understanding and Using Reading Assessment, K–12, including the third and fourth editions that guide educators in evaluating and using formative, summative, performance-based, and high-stakes reading assessments across the K–12 spectrum. His broader body of work includes co-editing the Handbook of Reading Research, Fourth Edition and contributing to texts on authentic reading assessment and individual differences in reading, as well as publishing extensively in leading journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, Cognition and Instruction, and The Reading Teacher.
