Dr. Traci Higgins is a senior researcher in STEM education at TERC, where she focuses on the teaching and learning of K–8 mathematics, data science K–12+, the social sciences, and interdisciplinary reasoning across subject areas. She has more than twenty years of experience conducting research and developing educational materials, processes, and models to support STEM learning in both school and out-of-school settings.
Higgins is a coauthor of But Why Does It Work?: Mathematical Argument in the Elementary Classroom (Heinemann, 2017), written with Susan Jo Russell, Deborah Schifter, Virginia Bastable, and Reva Kasman. Her work on mathematical argument and students’ structural understanding of arithmetic also appears in research publications, including a coauthored article on student-generated conjectures about the behavior of operations in the Journal of Educational Research in Mathematics.
