Tyrone C. Howard

Tyrone C. Howard is the Pritzker Family Endowed Chair and a professor in the School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. His research focuses on race, culture, equity, gender, and educational opportunity for minoritized student populations, and he has published more than 100 scholarly journal articles, book chapters, policy briefs, technical reports, and other academic works. A native of Compton, California, he previously worked as a classroom teacher in the Compton Unified School District and received UCLA’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2015.

Howard is the author of multiple books on educational equity and culturally responsive schooling, including Equity Now: Justice, Repair, and Belonging in Schools and No More Teaching Without Positive Relationships (NOT THIS, BUT THAT), as well as Why Race & Culture Matter in Schools and All Students Must Thrive. He serves as president and Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and is a member of the National Academy of Education, reflecting his standing as a leading scholar on racial inequality and justice in education.
