W. Richard Smith

W. Richard Smith is an educator and administrator who has focused extensively on response to intervention (RTI) and intensive supports for students performing significantly below grade level. He served as deputy superintendent of the Sanger Unified School District in California, a district of more than ten thousand students with a large population of minority and high-poverty students, where he helped lead efforts to build systematic, schoolwide intervention structures.

He is coauthor of Best Practices at Tier 3 [Elementary]: Intensive Interventions for Remediation, Elementary and Best Practices at Tier 3, Secondary (A Response to Intervention Guide to Implementing Tier 3 Teaching Strategies), both published by Solution Tree Press, which provide practical guidance for implementing intensive Tier 3 interventions within RTI at Work and multitiered systems of support at the K–5 and secondary levels.
