Yvonne S. Freeman

Yvonne S. Freeman is a professor emerita at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and a specialist in bilingual education, second language teaching, and biliteracy. Together with David E. Freeman, she has authored and coauthored numerous professional books for educators, including Essential Linguistics, Second Edition: What Teachers Need to Know to Teach ESL, Reading, Spelling, and Grammar, Academic Language Mastery: Grammar and Syntax in Context, Equitable Access for English Learners, Grades K–6: Strategies and Units for Differentiating Your Language Arts Curriculum, and the Spanish–English biliteracy text La enseñanza de la lectura y la escritura en español y en inglés en clases bilingües y de doble inmersión, segunda edición revisada.

Freeman’s work focuses on academic language development, dual language and bilingual classrooms, and effective instruction for emergent bilinguals and English learners. In addition to the titles above, she is coauthor or coeditor of multiple Heinemann books such as Between Worlds: Access to Second Language Acquisition, Academic Language for English Language Learners and Struggling Readers, Teaching Reading and Writing in Spanish and English in Bilingual and Dual Language Classrooms, and Dual Language Essentials for Teachers and Administrators.
