Martin R. West

Martin R. West is Academic Dean and Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he studies the politics of K–12 education and the effects of education policy on student learning and noncognitive development. He is also deputy director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Program on Education Policy and Governance, a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and editor-in-chief of Education Next.

West received a PhD in Government and Social Policy from Harvard University in 2006 and an MPhil in Economic and Social History from the University of Oxford in 2000. His books include Public Opinion and the Political Economy of Education Policy around the World, co-edited with Ludger Wößmann, and From Schoolhouse to Courthouse: The Judiciary’s Role in American Education, co-edited with Joshua Dunn.
