Nell K Duke

Nell K. Duke is a literacy scholar and educator whose work focuses on early literacy development, particularly among children living in economic poverty. She is a Professor of Language, Literacy, and Culture and of the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan, and has previously served as a professor of teacher education and educational psychology and co-director of the Literacy Achievement Research Center at Michigan State University. Duke earned her B.A. from Swarthmore College and her Ed.M. and Ed.D. in Human Development and Psychology, with an emphasis on language and literacy, from Harvard University. Her research and professional work emphasize informational reading and writing in young children, comprehension development and instruction in early schooling, and issues of equity in literacy education.

Duke is widely recognized for her contributions to literacy research, policy, and practice. She has received multiple honors, including the William S. Gray Citation of Merit from the International Literacy Association, the P. David Pearson Scholarly Influence Award from the Literacy Research Association, and early-career awards from the American Educational Research Association and the Literacy Research Association.
